Schweich. You may have noticed that your child cannot see clearly into the distance, which leads to poorer concentration at school and limitations while playing. Your child may be suffering from myopia (nearsightedness).
Nearsightedness occurs when the eye has grown too long in relation to the refractive power of the eye lens. The problem, however, is that nearsightedness often continues to increase, especially in children and adolescents, meaning the eyeball continues to grow in length. This also increases the risk of being affected by serious eye diseases later in life, such as cataracts, glaucoma, retinal detachment, and macular degeneration. One should intervene early in the process to prevent myopia from reaching higher levels.
For instance, increased time spent outdoors shows a protective effect against the development of myopia. During prolonged near-vision work, regular breaks should be taken to look at distant objects instead of close ones.
In addition to these easy-to-implement measures, there are currently several options for myopia control whose effectiveness has been investigated in studies.
