Fitting of contact lenses
in 10 steps
1. Anamnesis and needs analysis
During an initial consultation, the various contact lens systems will be presented to you: rigid gas permeable or soft lenses with potential replacement schedules in daily, weekly, monthly, or annual cycles. Together, we will determine your individual requirements and preferences to decide which type of contact lens is best suited for you. Subsequent tests and measurements will determine whether the results continue to support this type of contact lens.
2. Determination of visual acuity
This measurement is used to further specify your contact lenses, focusing on the optical correction.
3. Topographical measurement
The topographical measurement of the cornea is performed using a computer keratograph with over 20,000 measuring points. Topography is another very important measurement that provides us with precise data on the curvature of your cornea, its diameter, and changes toward the periphery. This data set serves as the basis for the exact determination of the radius, diameter, and flattening of your contact lenses.
4. Examination of the anterior segment of the eye
The anterior, visible section of the eye is examined with a microscope to determine its current condition. During this examination, the quality and quantity of your tear film are assessed, and any abnormalities that might preclude the wearing of contact lenses are identified. Optionally, the tear film can be further analyzed using computer technology (keratograph).
5. Calculation of contact lens parameters
Based on the measured data, the parameters for your first contact lens are calculated (geometry and optical values).
6. Insertion of contact lenses
If you have not used contact lenses before, our specialists will insert the lens for you with a practiced hand.
7. Checking the contact lenses
After an individual adaptation phase (approximately 45 minutes), the fit and mobility of the contact lens are checked using a corneal microscope and modified if necessary.
8. Over-refraction
Subsequently, a refraction/visual acuity test is performed with the contact lenses in place. This allows for any slight adjustments to the optical values of your contact lenses to be determined if necessary.
9. Final contact lenses
After checking the fit and determining visual acuity, as well as making any possible modifications, the final data for your lenses are determined.
10. Customer instruction
If you are not yet familiar with handling contact lenses, we will practice the insertion and removal of the lenses with you. We will provide you with important instructions regarding cleaning and care. You will receive information about contact lens wearing times for the first few weeks. Finally, we will schedule an appointment for a follow-up check after about 14 days, during which both the fit and strength of the contact lens, as well as the health of the eyes in relation to the contact lenses, will be examined.
