Nearsightedness occurs when the eye has grown too long in relation to the refractive power of the eye lens. The problem, however, is that nearsightedness often continues to increase, especially in children and adolescents, meaning the eyeball continues to grow in length. This also increases the risk of being affected by serious eye diseases later in life, such as cataracts, glaucoma, retinal detachment, and macular degeneration. For instance, increased time spent outdoors shows a protective effect against the development of myopia. During prolonged near-vision work, regular breaks should be taken to look at distant objects instead of close ones. <\/p>\n
